Moth inside
Ellery Hamill
Class of ‘28
A moth has perched on the ceiling
Bathed in the artificial glow of fluorescent lights
With skin as velveteen as the dark sky
Wings fluttering gently
Seeking an escape
Beady black eyes and spindly legs
Body sienna as the leaves in fall
A strange beauty, as if kissed by a harvest moon
Existing at peace
Moth, why have you come inside?
This is our home, but it has been your vast outside
Much longer than it has been our hall
Do you wish to return to the infinite sky
Or stay in our man-made warmth?
Screams of those around me echo is its wings spread
I wonder if you know, moth, the screams are about you
I see you flutter about, dodging the things being thrown
Trying to knock you down
One has struck, two.
Soon you are on the cold relentless floor
And the rapid flapping of wings ceases
There you are, under a fluorescent moon
Dead
Because you were big and beautiful, trapped inside
For a reason I cannot comprehend, you could not live
This was your home long before it was ours
And for the crime of living
You have been punished

Here is the mystery:
how each high school class period
can be as singular a character
as a Trinity,
how they can together grow
in sincerity, focus, and boldness,
before the May wind comes
and scatters them to bring
what they they have taken
from one body into the next ones.
